REPORT ON TWO-DAYS WORKSHOP ON KOHA
Date(22.9.2015 – 23.9.2015)
Two days workshop on Koha open source software was conducted for I and II M.L.I.Sc students on 22.9.2015 and 23.9.2015.
Day 1:22.9.2015(Tuesday)
          The first day programme on Koha open source software was conducted in CDF smart class room. The inauguration started with silent prayer, followed by welcome address by G.M.Abinaya II-M.L.I.Sc. The resource persons are Mrs.Sivagami, Technical Director, 2CQR Automation, Chennai and Mr.Sugavan Raj, Technical Consultant, 2CQR Automation, Chennai. They have given hands on experience in Koha. In the morning session they explained about Koha modules and in the afternoon session we practiced Koha modules in the internet lab.
Day 2: 23.9.2015(Wednesday)
          The second day of the programme was held in conference hall. In the morning session they explained about Koha administration and Koha tools and in afternoon session, we learnt how to install the Koha software. We also followed their instruction, commands and installed the open source Koha in our laptop.
The valedictory function was held at 3.00 P.M on the same day. It was started with prayer. V.Sadhana II-M.L.I.Sc welcomed the gathering for the valedictory function. Our Principal Dr.D.Kamalaveni gave the valedictory address and encouraged the students to extend their wings of knowledge in all dimessions. Some of the students gave their feedbacks about workshop. The Principal distributed the certificates to all the participants. Both practical and theoretical sessions were useful to gain knowledge on the software. The  two days workshop was found to be very useful for all the students.  The programme ended with vote of thanks by P.Kokila and National Anthem.

Report on Library Visit to Tanjore

The association of PG department of Library and Information Science “Bibliotheque club de Vellalar”, arranged a trip to Tanjore to visit various libraries on 7th August 2015.A group of  23 students( I and II M.L.I.Sc) with 2 faculty members (Mr.T.Stephen and Ms.X.MercyAngeline), have visited Tamil University Library, IICTP Library and Saraswathy Mahal.

TAMIL UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

First we have been to “Tamil University”.It is the one of the famous and renowned library, which holds a good collection of classic books in Tamil as well as in other languages. The infrastructure of the building is designed more like the parliament building at New Delhi. The various sections in Tamil University Library are Stack Room, Periodical Section, Personal Section, Reference Section, Mobile Library (cart used by Dr.S.R.Ranganathan) and Newspaper Section. The Periodical Section has 30,000 journals and back volumes, the Stack Room contains nearly 50,000 books, the Personal Section has the personal collections of individuals donated by philanthropist and theReference Section has rare collection of dictionaries, encyclopaedia’s, gazettes, yearbooks and back volumes in various languages. The appearance and arrangement of Library was comfortable for the user to access easily. There was an Artefacts Section where the mobile library cart used by Dr.S.R.Ranganathan preserved .It was the first mobile library used by Dr.S.R.Ranganathan (Father of Library Science) to educate various people living invillages. It is made up of wood and there are shelves to arrange books.



1INDIAN INSTITUTE OFCROP PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY(IICPT)

Next we have visited the Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology(IICPT) which has a knowledge resource centre. It is a special library and its objectives is to help the researchers in the field of crop and food processing. The knowledge centre has three floors with centralised air-conditioning facility. The infrastructure was very impressive we had knowledge exchanging session with Mr.P.Peter Kennedy, Technical Officer Knowledge Resource centre. He shared his 10 years’ of experience in serving the users of the knowledge centre.We also visited the incubation centre were machine like tray drier, oven for baking, wheat powder dry machine, pulp drier etc and knew its purpose and uses explained by thestaff. This institute also provides training for outsiders on the way and means of  preservation of food products.

SARASWATHY MAHAL
     
       In the afternoon we moved to Saraswathy Mahal the famous historical library.Nearly 49,000 manuscripts are preserved in the library. The manuscripts are preserved by applying lemon-grass oil for once in three years. The lemon-grass oil is not only helps to preserve but also makes the letter visible on the manuscripts for the  researches and translators. The palm leaves are available in many languages such as Tamil, French, Hindi, Telungu, Sanskrit, Marathi and English. We also visited the museum which has the paintings of Raja Serafoji and the paintings of London and Pondicherry. The painting on human anatomy is a real feast of our eyes. The manuscripts in the library are all digitalized. Ateam of pandits are translating the information from the manuscripts into the easily understandable form and are published is the form of books. The library has also released a book on methods of preserving the manuscripts.

SRI BRIHADISVARA TEMPLE

We finally visited the Brihadisvarar temple which is also known as the “big temple”, which was built by Raja Raja Cholan in the 10th century. The statue of Nandi sculptured in one rock is one of the remarkable significance of the temple. The temple is located in a large area with big statues. There were several lingam’s placed in and out of the temple. The Lord Siva’s statue is very big in size when compared to other Shivan temple. On seeing the Shiva lingam we were speechless and admired by its true beauty.
          

The trip was very informative, we have learnt many things about the libraries and its collection.

Software & Standards (CDS-ISIS; J- ISIS and MARC21)
22 and 23, January, 2015  

The association of PG department of Library and Information Science “Bibliotheque Club De Vellalar”, Vellalar College For Women (VCW), Erode and Roja Muthaiya Research Library, Chennai jointly organized two day workshop on “Software and Standards”(CDS-ISIS; J-ISIS and MARC21). The workshop was held on 22 and 23, January, 2015 at Conference Hall.


       

               The Inaugural function of the workshop starts with prayer song. Mrs. Mercy Lydia, Asst. Professor, PGDLIS welcomed the gathering. The correspondent and secretary, Vellalar College for Women, Thiru S.D. Chandrasekar, gave the Presidential address and has presided over the function.
            Dr.Kalaivani, Principal in-charge, VCW, Erode and Dr.Sadhik Batsha, HOD, Department Of Library And Information Science, Periyar university has felicitated in the inaugural function.
The inaugural address was given by the chief guest of the workshop Mr. G. Sundar, Director of RMRL, Chennai. He explained the need and importance of software in the field of library science and the scope in the related fields. The inaugural function concluded with vote of thanks by Ms. M. Sathya, secretary, Bibliotheque Club De Vellalar.
There were four technical sessions and the Resource person for the sessions was Mr. R.Prakash, Asst. Director, RMRL, Chennai.  After the tea break, the first technical session began at 11.30am. It was Introduction of CDS/ISIS; J-ISIS and MARC21 and he also explained the AACR-2 rules and regulation.


After lunch the second technical session started at 2.00pm. which was about the Creation of database using J-ISIS and CDS/ISIS software. His simple language and step by step method of teaching was easy to understand and follow. The first day of the workshop ends by 3.45pm.
23 January, 2015(Friday)
The second day of the workshop began with formal welcome address proposed by Mrs. Mercy Lydia, Asst. Professor of PGDLIS. There were two technical sessions taken over by the Resource person. He explained application of MARC21 format in J-ISIS software in detailed manner. Then there was an interaction with the participants and feedbacks were received from them.
The presentation of the resource person was really wonderful and informative and the way he presented was well appreciated by all the participants. The presentation has motivated the participants to work in CDS-ISIS and J-ISIS software. Nearly 35 participants have attended the two day workshop and were benefitted.
The valedictory function was held on 23 January, 2015 afternoon at 2.30pm. Mrs. D. Esther Delsy, Asst. professor, PGDLIS, VCW welcomed the gathering.
Mr. T.Stephen, HOD, PGDLIS, VCW has given a presentation i.e., highlights of our department activities (projects such as open biblio, subject gateways and GSDL). The special address was given by the resource person .
Dr. D. Kamalaveni, Principal, VCW gave the valedictory address and has appreciated our students` extension activities. Mr. T. Magudeeswaran, Librarian, CN College, Erode appreciated the efforts of the department in his felicitation. All the participants have given a positive feedback about the workshop and the hospitatlity.
The certificates were distributed by the Principal and the chief guest.     Ms.D. Jabaselvi Juliyet, president of Bibliotheque Club De Vellalar, PGDLIS has given the vote of thanks. Finally the two day workshop has concluded with national anthem.

The association of PG Department of Library and Information Science “Bibliotheque Club De Vellalar”, organized a Guest Lecture on “Subject Gateways” on September 07,2013 in the department.
            The Programme began with silent prayer and Mrs.S.Savitha, II MLISc., Welcomed the gathering. Mr.T.Stephen, Head, PG Department of Library and Information Science introduced the resource person Mr. B.Maruthu Pandian, Deputy Manager-Knowledge Services, Advinus Therapeutics Ltd., Bangalore. The first session of the day the concept of Subject Gateway, difference between google search and subject gateways with necessary examples and other search techniques were  well explained by the Resource Person through PPT with various illustrations.

In the second session he has given a practical demonstration on various methods of Information retrieval using internet, creating Subject gateway using software such as MOODLE, various subject gateways. The day ended with vote thanks by Ms. Nithya, I MLISc., and National Anthem.

A One-day Workshop on Web Designing Tools and Techniques

A one-day workshop on Web Designing Tools and Techniques was conducted on September 27, 2013 in the department.
            The concept of virtual library would be incomplete without the knowledge of Web applications and Internet. The association of PG Department of Library and Information Science “Bibliotheque Club De Vellalar”, intended to impart this knowledge to the students of MLISc., came into reality when the day began with a silent prayer invoking the almighty and HIS wisdom of learning. Before the first session Ms. M. Priyanka, II MLISc., welcomed the gathering and Mrs. Mercy Lydia, Assistant Professor, introduced the resource person Mr.B Jeyapragash, Assistant Professor, PG and Research Department of Library and Information Science, Bharathidasan University, Trichirapalli.  
The blues about the technical aspects of designing a web page was slowly removed when the Resource Person explained the basics of www, web browsers, switching, routers, HTML tags etc. In the afternoon the students were taken to Computer Lab where they have designed their own web page and created their own blogs under the guidance of the resource person. A sense of gratitude, satisfaction and pride of ownership (of their own creation-website and blog) were reflected in the faces of every student was a wonderful thing to witness by the end of the day. 

The workshop ended with vote thanks by Ms.Jebaselvi Juliet, I MLISc. and National Anthem.

The association of PG Department of Library and Information Science “Bibliotheque Club De Vellalar”, organized a Guest Lecture on Research Methodology Techniques and SPSS Package on September 20,2013 in the department.
            The Programme began with silent prayer and a Ms. K.R. Lavanyaa, II MLISc., Welcomed the gathering. Mr.T.Stephen, Head, PG Department of Library and Information Science introduced the resource person Dr. Esther Socrates, Head & Assistant Professor, PG and Research Department of Social Work, CSI Bishop Appasamy College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore.    The first session of the day was about “Why, What and How of Research, its design, methods and techniques well explained by the Resource Person through PPT with various illustrations.
In the second session she has given the practical demonstrated on creating tables, charts, graphs and diagrams using SPSS package LCD and students have got hands on experience as they have installed SPSS in their Laptops. The tabulations to calculate mean, median and mode, chi-square, f-test and t-test were the various other applications useful for the analysis and interpretation part of research were discussed on the day. The day ended with vote thanks by Ms. Sathya, I MLISc., and National Anthem.
